P.S. ARTS sponsors "Family Art Night" events featuring hands-on art making events for our students and their families as a way to spread the word about the importance of arts education and to encourage family bonding through creative activity.  These popular events have anywhere from 50-250 attendees, so we always need volunteers to distribute supplies, greet guests and help kids with their art projects.

This year's Family Art Night features the following projects.

1.) Romare Bearden: (September 2, 1911 – March 12, 1988) Romare Bearden was an African American artist and writer and an important figure in the Harlem Renaissance. He's best known for his richly textured collages.  Family members will each create their own mixed media collage (oil pastels, construction paper, ephemera and found objects) around the theme "our neighborhood".  The individual collages will then be joined into one "family collage" for a panoramic view, featuring sights from the neighborhood in which they live.

2.) "Kamon"-Japanese Family Crest.  Families will use modeling compound (Model Magic) to create their own kamon featuring symbols that represent family qualities.

You don't have to have any special art skills, you just have to love kids and creativity!

*Volunteers are asked to arrive 1 hour-45 minutes prior to start time and stay for 30 minutes after the event has ended.  Actual event run time is from 5:30pm-7:30pm
